Newport's Best Shopping:
Newport, not only a seafaring city, was the colonial capital of Rhode Island Plantation. Narragansett Bay, one of the few deep water ports on the east coast, became a major seaport for commerce and trade. The olde New England seaport plan of one long street (Thames St.) along the water and the wharves would develop into the commercial center of the city. Today's shopping can be as simple as looking for a sun hat to a mission for antiques.
Start your walk in the historic Brick Market in Washington Square ... staying essentially on Thames Street heading south browse through the wonderfully, charming little shops. Explore the cobblestone side streets and meander Bowen's and Bannister Wharfs. Pedestrian friendly streets with outdoor restaurants, allow yourself to experience the charm and magic of this olde seaport.
